In August, the EU substantially increased its imports of ethanol and dried distillers grains (DDGS) from the US, with its ethanol purchases surging 53% to 12.7 million gallons, recent statistics presented by the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) show.
The EU’s imports of DDGS rose by 25% to 105,454 tonnes. Strong demand for US DDGS in August also came from Turkey, which bought 117,334 tonnes, up 69%.
In the 2023/2024 marketing year, from September 2023 through August 2024, the US achieved record ethanol exports of almost 1.75 billion gallons, as reported by the US Grains Council, citing official data. According to these figures, the EU-27 imported 140,674,100 tonnes of ethanol from the US in the marketing year, marking a rise of 17.2%. The bloc’s imports of DDCS were broadly flat at 567,936 tonnes. In value terms, the US exports of ethanol and DDGS to the EU amounted to USD 319,7 million and USD 154,5 million, respectively.
Turkey, meanwhile, imported 671,988 tonnes of DDGS for the marketing year, up 18.4%, and negligible amounts of ethanol.
