The first shipments of US distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) have been delivered to Vietnam after the country announced in September it would lift its suspension of DDGS imports.

Trade group US Grains Council said that 7,850 tonnes of US DDGS have arrived into the port of Ho Chi Minh City between October 25 and November 10. Vietnam has become an important market for US DDGS but the Vietnamese authorities decided to temporarily suspend DDGS imports in October 2016 in the wake of the detection of quarantine pests, the organisation explained. As a result, US DDGS sales to Vietnam fell 50% in 2016/17 to 495,000 tonnes.

USGC said it worked hard with the US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) to address the Vietnamese government’s concerns.
