Greenfield Global Inc of Canada said last week it will expand its production capacity for high-purity alcohols in response to domestic and international demand on account of the coronavirus pandemic and the growing need for alcohol-based hand sanitisers and surface disinfectants.

The producer of fuel ethanol and high-purity specialty alcohols and solvents will be able to produce additional 100 million litres per year of various grades of high purity alcohols, including US Pharmacopeia Grade (USP) grade, at its ethanol plant in Johnstown, Ontario before the end of next year.

The company will increase supply for its home market, as well as its newly opened European packaging facility and hub in Portlaoise, Ireland. It said the new capacity will enable more efficient logistics for many of its customers in North America and Europe.

The expansion project at the 250-million-litre-per-year facility kicks off in October and is expected to be completed in 12 months.
