The poultry industry in Egypt could be a new market for distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and has been identified as a potential opportunity by the US Grains Council (USGC), a US export-promoting industry group.
The broiler sector, in particular, currently does not include DDGS in its feed, USGC said after a visit by its staff to Egypt in November.
According to the organisation, broiler farming is Egypt’s largest feed sector, consuming around 3 million tonnes of feed in 2021. Reece Cannady, USGC assistant regional director for the Middle East and Europe, estimates that at a 10% inclusion rate, this could be a DDGS market of 300,000 tonnes, worth some USD 100 million at current prices.
USGC also said that Egypt used to be a growing market for DDGS but sales have flattened out.
US DDGS exports reached 11 million tonnes in 2020/2021, with the biggest among the total of 69 buyers being Mexico, Vietnam, South Korea, Turkey and Indonesia.
