South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Japan were among the top 10 global markets for US distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) in the 2017/2018 marketing year.

This is according to the 2018 annual review by the US Grains Council (USGC). The combined import volumes for these five countries reaches 4.5 million metric tonnes, out of total US DDGS exports of 11.7 million tonnes in 2017/2018.

South Korea ranked second after Mexico with US DDGS imports of 1.18 million tonnes, a 22.3% rise year-on-year. USGC said its education and market development efforts in South Korea have resulted in 97% of local feed producers in the poultry and livestock industries using US DDGS in their rations.

South Korea also ranked as the sixth largest market for US ethanol in 2017/2018, purchasing  69.7 million tonnes of the green fuel.

One more Asian market for US DDGS crossed the 1-million-tonne mark. Vietnam imported twice as much DDGS last year as in the 2016/2017 marketing year, reaching a volume of almost 1.05 million tonnes. Thailand purchased about 964,000 tonnes, an increase of 22.5%. Indonesia imported 816,000 tonnes, or 59.1% more than a year earlier. Imports in Japan remained stable at 483,000 tonnes.
