The US sold 1.05 billion gallons of ethanol abroad in 2016, the second highest annual volume after 2011’s record of 1.19 billion gallons, the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) announced recently.

US ethanol exports were up from 823 million gallons in 2015. In terms of value they increased by 13% year-over-year to USD 2.02 billion.

The three largest markets for US ethanol last year were Brazil, Canada and China, which together accounted for 68% of exports.

As the US imported just 34 million gallons during 2016, net ethanol exports for the year were 1.01 billion gallons, a new record high.

“Our industry produced 15.2 billion gallons of ethanol last year, and while we continue to meet our domestic needs, ethanol exports are essential for future growth,” said RFA president and chief executive Bob Dinneen.
